Juniper berries come from the juniper tree (Juniperus communis), a coniferous evergreen shrub. For thousands of years, juniper berries have been used for their numerous health benefits. They are known to be high in nutrients such as Vitamins C, as well as being high in flavonoid antioxidants. Vitamin C is highly important in maintaining a healthy immune system and also in aiding the synthesis of collagen. Juniper berries are rich in volatile oils that contain monoterpenes like camphor, which are known to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Traditionally, juniper berries have been used for the treatment of diabetes, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. In traditional Turkish medicine, juniper berries are used as an antiseptic, diuretic, and in the treatment of gastrointestinal ailments. Western American tribes combine juniper berries and Berberis root bark in the form of an herbal tea. Furthermore, in Romania, juniper berries are made into a tincture and taken for its diuretic and antiseptic effects, and applied externally for skin conditions.

Additionally, juniper berries have also been used in culinary dishes. The fresh berries are too bitter when eaten raw, so they have to be dried first and crushed or grounded to flavor the dish. Juniper berries can be used in soups, sauces, stews, beer and gin.

To make juniper berry tea, tablespoon of berries, or an infuser filled with the berries, in one cup of boiling water and steep for 15 minutes.
