Pure Iris (Orris) Flower Essential Oil Natural Aromatherapy Essential Oil Humidifier Relaxing Massage Oil

The Iris plant is a beautiful flower that is bright purple, delicate, and often considered to be rather elegant. With an aroma that is sweet, green, earthy, and floral, Iris Oil is extracted from the roots of the plant that are known as Orris roots. This means that you may find it labeled for sale under the name of Orris Oil or Orris Root Oil. Because of the process used to extract the oil from the roots, Iris oil is not actually an essential oil but it is an Absolute Oil. This means that it likely contains some of the chemical constituents which were used for extraction, often alcohol.

In order to make the Iris Absolute Oil, the Orris Roots are cured and stored for up to four years prior to extraction. This is what makes Iris Oil rather expensive, because of the long amount of time that is required to prepare and produce it. The strength of the Iris Absolute that you purchase will be measured by the percentage of Irones that are included, which strengthen based mostly on the amount of time the Orris roots are allowed to age. Once the roots of the iris plant are aged, they are steam distilled which then results in a thick compound that is often referred to as Iris Butter. After this, certain chemicals are used to turn the butter into a useable oil.

Iris Absolute Oils that are high in Irones will be much more costly than those low in Irones. Most oils that are offered commercially will contain either 1%, 8%, or 15% Irones. However, even those with only 1% Irones can be highly useful and enjoyable for perfumery, scenting body products, and making scents for use in the household such as candles, room sprays, and potpourri.

Uses of Iris Essential Oil / Absolute Oil

Iris Absolute is most often used for perfumery, adding a delicious floral fragrance to various products for the body such as lotions, body oils, and bath salts. The scent of Iris Oil has a middle note that comes out as a flowery, sweet scent that is slightly powdery.
