Botanical Information:

Myrrh isn't a plant itself but rather a product derived from plants, making it one of the oldest plant-based products still actively utilized. Commiphora molmol, one of the trees producing myrrh, releases a gummy white resinous sap when incised with a knife, which swiftly solidifies in the sun to become myrrh.

The myrrh tree belongs to the Burseraceae family and has a compact, shrubby appearance with thorny characteristics. Despite not growing taller than 9 feet, these trees are robust, featuring knotted branches with right-angled branchlets that terminate in sharp spines. The trifoliate leaves are sparse, small, unequal, oval, and entire.

The bark contains ducts, and the tissue between them breaks down, forming sizable cavities. These cavities, along with the remaining ducts, fill with a granular secretion that is released when the bark is wounded or through natural fissures. Initially, it flows as a pale yellow liquid but solidifies into a reddish-brown mass, commonly found in commerce in tear-shaped forms of various sizes, with the average size resembling that of a walnut. The surface is rough and powdered, and the pieces are brittle with a granular fracture, semi-transparent, oily, and often display whitish marks. The aroma is aromatic, while the taste is both acrid and bitter.

Common names & nomenclature: The term "myrrh" originates from the Aramaic word "murr," signifying "was bitter."

Also known as: Myrrh, myrrh gum, common myrrh, Commiphora myrrha.

Features and further details

Myrrh is the resinous sap obtained from a Mediterranean tree, gathered by making incisions in its bark to collect the flowing "tears" of resin. Once fully dried, myrrh adopts a stunning amber hue and emanates an elegant and exotic fragrance. These characteristics contribute to the popularity of pure myrrh as an incense ingredient, whether used on its own or blended with other herbs and resins. Additionally, ground myrrh resin holds a traditional role in crafting salves and various topical formulations. It is also a common component in natural dental products like tooth powders and mouthwashes

Explore a fresh approach:
