Botanical Insights: Explore the intricacies of Mullein
Description:
Botanical Information on Mullein:
Description: Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) a biennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family, forms a rosette of leaves in its first year. The leaves, reaching up to 50 cm in length, are covered with star-shaped trichomes, creating a silvery appearance. In the second year, the plant produces a single unbranched stem, typically 1–2 m tall, culminating in a dense spike of flowers. After flowering, the stem and fruits persist, drying into dark brown, stiff structures of densely packed, ovoid-shaped seed capsules. The plant has a shallow taproot.
The flowers boast five stamens, a 5-lobed calyx tube, and a 5-petalled corolla, bright yellow and 1.5–3 cm wide. Flowers are nearly sessile, with short pedicels (2 mm). Stamens vary, with upper ones shorter and covered in yellow or whitish hairs, while lower ones have glabrous filaments and larger anthers. Each flower opens before dawn, lasting for a single day, and flowering occurs for up to three months in early to late summer.
Common Names & Nomenclature: The common names often reference the plant's hairiness, including Wooly Mullein, Velvet Mullein, Hare's Beard, and similar. Other names include Great Mullein, Velvet Dock, Candlestick, Ice-Leaf, Blanket Mullein, and various terms like Beggar's Blanket, Poor Man's Blanket, and Old Man's Blanket. Additionally, it is known by names such as Shepherd's Club and Shepherd's Staff. The origin of the word "lemon" may have Middle Eastern roots.
