Botanical Insights on Milk Thistle Seed:

Description: Milk Thistle Seed (Silybum marianum) a member of the Asteraceae family, is an annual or biannual plant of noteworthy proportions. It can attain heights ranging from 1 to 6 1/2 feet, with a base occasionally extending nearly 5 feet in diameter. Exhibiting a conical shape, the grooved stem of milk thistle is somewhat cottony, and in larger specimens, hollow.

The leaves of milk thistle are oblong to lanceolate, featuring either lobate or pinnate structures with spiny edges. Milk-white veins traverse the leaves, which are devoid of hair and display a glossy green appearance.

In the summer through autumn (specifically June to August in the Northern Hemisphere and December to February in the Southern Hemisphere), red-purple flower heads measuring 1 1/2 to 4 3/4 inches in both length and width grace the plant. The bracts of milk thistle, like its leaves, are hairless, adorned with triangular, spine-edged appendages tipped with stout yellow spines.

The achenes, small dry one-seeded fruits, are black, accompanied by a simple long white pappus and surrounded by a yellow basal ring.

Common Names & Nomenclature: Legend attributes the milk-white veins of the leaves to the milk of the Virgin Mary, which supposedly fell upon a Thistle plant, leading to its name "Our Lady's Thistle." The Latin name of the species shares this derivation.

Also known as: Cardus marianus, milk thistle, blessed milk thistle, Marian Thistle, Mary Thistle, Saint Mary's Thistle, Mediterranean milk thistle, variegated thistle, Scotch thistle. Note: It should not be confused with Centaurea benedicta (also known as Cnicus benedictus or Blessed Thistle).
