MARSHMALLOW ROOT (POWDERED)
28.3 GRAMS / 1 OZ
Botanical Information :
Althaea officinalis belongs to the Malvaceae family. It features upright stems reaching 3-4 feet, with a few lateral branches that decline in the fall.
The leaves are thick, roundish, and ovate-cordate, with short stalks attached to the stem. They measure 2-3 inches in length and about 1¼ inch in width, displaying irregularly toothed margins. Stellate hairs densely cover the leaves, rendering them soft and velvety on both sides.
Despite flowers resembling common mallow, they are smaller, pale, and often arranged in panicles (loose, branching clusters). The stamens form a united tube, and the kidney-shaped, one-celled anthers characterize the flower. Marshmallows bloom in late summer (August and September), followed by flat, round fruits often called cheeses.
True Marshmallow is distinguished by: 1) numerous divisions of the outer calyx (six to nine cleft); 2) hoary down thickly covering stems and foliage; and 3) numerous panicles of pale blush-colored flowers.
The perennial Marshmallow roots possess long, thick roots tapering at the end. They are tough and pliant, with whitish-yellow exteriors and fibrous white interiors. The entire plant, especially the root, is rich in mild mucilage, which is more emollient than that of the common Mallow.
**Common Names & Nomenclature:**
Both the generic name Althaea and the family name are of Greek origin, with Althaea derived from altho and Malvaceae from the Greek malake. Common names with "marsh" refer to the plant's habitat, while "cheeses" pertains to the fruit.
Also known as:
marshmallow, marsh mallow, common marshmallow, mallards, moorish mallow, sweet weed, wymote, mortification root, cheeses, althea, schloss tea, white maoow, hock herb, mauls
Features and further details in Uses:
The term "marshmallow root" pertains to the subterranean "runners" of the plant that shares its name with the fluffy confection we recognize today, albeit a less sweet iteration that initially delighted the Egyptians.
Romans, too, boiled and consumed marshmallow roots as a vegetable. In contemporary periods of scarcity, Syrians depend on marshmallow roots more than any other indigenous plant for sustenance. Owing to its abundant mucilage content, marshmallow root is employed in the creation of oils and salves, offering a soothing and softening effect on the skin.
