Cornflower, also commonly known as Bachelor’s Button, blue poppy, and boutonniere flower, is a flowering plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Its Latin name Centaurea is derived from the centaur Chiron in Greek mythology. Chiron’s purpose was to teach humanity to heal from their emotional and physical wounds. He showed humanity to apply the healing benefits of herbs for those wounds. The species name cyanus comes from the goddess Flora or Cyanus, whose favorite flower it was said to be. Cornflower tea has many applications and can be utilized to treat many health issues such as: fevers, colds, chest congestion, water retention, indigestion, liver and gallbladder disorders. Additionally, cornflower tea or infusions can be applied as a topical wash for dandruff and eczema. It can be utilized as a mouthwash for bleeding gums. In fact, one of its most common uses is as an eye wash for eye irritation. Cornflower has been known to reduce inflammation, treat wounds, bruises, and muscle aches. Cosmetically, it is an astringent and has been used to treat puffy eyes and undereye dark circles, strengthen nails, and treat skin irritation or rashes.

Cornflower petals can also be added to green salads, fruit salads, and desserts. To make cornflower tea, steep 1 teaspoon of dried petals into 1 cup of boiling water for 5-10 minutes. When using to apply topically as a mouth wash, eye, hair, or body rinse, steep for 20 minutes. Let it cool before application.
