Botanical Information on Ashwagandha
Description: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), a compact evergreen shrub belonging to the Solanaceae (Nightshade) family, typically reaches a height of 13-30 inches. Radiating from a central stem, its branches form a radial pattern. The flowers are small, green, and hermaphroditic. The entire plant is covered with short, fine, silver-grey, branched hairs. Stems are brownish, ranging from prostrate to erect, sometimes devoid of leaves below. The leaves, arranged alternately (opposite on flowering shoots), are simple, with entire to slightly wavy margins, and have a broad ovate, obovate, or oblong shape. The mature fruit is orange-red, presenting as a hairless spherical berry.
In southern Africa, flowering primarily occurs from October to June, with the fruiting period extending from October to July.
Common Names & Nomenclature: Ashwagandha derives its Hindu name, meaning "horse smell," due to its aroma reminiscent of a sweaty horse. The Latin species name, somnifera, translates to "sleep-inducing."
