What is mastic?
Mastic, also known as 'Tears of Chios', is the natural resin of the evergreen sticky pistachio tree (Pistacia lentiscus), which grows in the Mediterranean region. The original Chios mastic comes from trees growing exclusively on the Greek island of Chios. It is obtained by incising their bark, whereby the resin rises freely to the surface, from where it is collected and then dried using maltodextrin (a polysaccharide made from starch), which most companies do not include in their ingredients.
Mastic is a source of many beneficial ingredients that also give it a refreshing, resinous scent - mastic acids and valuable essential oils predominate among them.
