Glycine, or aminoacetic acid, is the simplest of all protein amino acids. It is the only one that occurs in only one spatial configuration and has no optical function. Therefore, the name glycine, exceptionally, does not contain the prefix L-, as is the case with the other amino acids. It is also one of the most abundant amino acids in the human body, being an important structural component of proteins. It is estimated that it makes up an average of approx. 7% of the amino acid residues in proteins. At the same time, glycine makes up over 30% of the amino acids in collagen, and is one of the fundamental components involved in the synthesis of this important protein.
Glycine is an endogenous amino acid, which means that the body can synthesise it on its own. This is done mainly by synthesis from choline, but also by conversion of other amino acids such as serine or alanine. As with other endogenous amino acids, however, the synthesis of glycine may be limited by various adverse factors, such as medical conditions that impair its synthesis, or an unbalanced, protein-poor diet.
