Hops are the strobiles (flowers) of the hop plant Humulus Lupulus. They have been used for over 10,000 years as a critical component of the process of brewing beer, adding flavor and preserving the popular beverage. A little lesser known fact about hops is that even before their use in the beer brewing process, they were commonly used as a mild sedative, often used as a sleep-aid. During the Middle Ages in Germany, monks were known for their skilled beer brewing, and they made frequent references to hops in their writings. They also prescribed hop teas to men to help them reduce their lio and make it easier to remain faithful to their wives.
Today, hops are used for the aforementioned purposes along with several others, which include hormonal support, stress aid, and to help the intestines with poor digestion.

Hops contain several active ingredients, highlighted by lupulone, humulone, lupulinic acid, lupulin, and asparagine.
